A Year in Projects: Internship Reflection
Jenny Rodriguez was one of our incredible interns this past year! Jenny is a senior at Marian University studying marketing, sales, and Spanish. Below Jenny shares some of the projects she worked on, key takeaways, and her favorite memories!
Throughout my year-long internship at Green Loop Marketing, I had the opportunity to work on various projects, including areas of marketing and communications I hadn’t previously explored.
Entering my last year of college, I knew I wanted to gain as much experience as possible, especially in digital marketing. What better way to achieve this goal than by joining an agency, where I could gain hands-on experience across diverse marketing aspects, all while collaborating with different industries and clientele?
Digital Marketing Audits
Aside from competitive research, I had previously never conducted a digital marketing audit. For the audits, I began with updating decks to match the client’s branding. Soon after, I was helping with the competitive snapshot, social media profile review, social media and email data review, and providing observations and recommendations based on the data. To my surprise… pulling and analyzing the data ended up being the most fun part! I worked with platforms like MailChimp and Agency Analytics. I was previously stuck in the mindset that, “numbers are boring.” But in the end left with the, “you know what… data doesn’t lie” mindset.
Media Releases
Although I’d heard of and read media releases, I hadn’t written one myself. Nor had I really worked on any public relations. At Green Loop, I helped with several media releases, across different industries. One of the media releases was even recently picked up by the Hamilton Reporter! Our copywriter, Una, provided great insights into improving the tone and flow to better communicate the message and convey the story.
HubSpot’s Social Media Marketing Certification
I had the opportunity to complete and receive a HubSpot Academy certification in Social Media Marketing. During this course, I learned about social media strategies, social listening vs social monitoring, conducting social media audits, influencer marketing, user generated content, social selling, and more. Among all the fascinating topics covered, one that truly piqued my interest was social media advertising! This was a relatively new topic to me, but I now know about the different types of paid ads available including lead ads. Most importantly, I've learned how to create high-quality, high-engagement, and high-conversion ads.
Events
Once you work at Green Loop, you realize how connected everyone is in Indy! Attending internal and various client events was not only fun, but it also allowed me to network with different professionals. While doing so, I also tried and did many new things including fowling (bowling with a football), goat cheese, single kayaking, an Enneagram test, and a chocolate class!
Social Media Captions and Graphics
I had experience creating captions and graphics for social media in the past, but working at an agency you do this for various industries and clients at the same time. This kept social media post creation fun and different each week! I also gained experience using scheduling platforms like Hootsuite to schedule posts in advance.
Research
I can’t stress enough the importance of this! We do research weekly. From learning about the latest trends, looking for relevant local influencers and content ideation, researching competitors, and reading about best practices, you name it, I did it! Doing research allows you to stay up to date, relevant, and overall, gain a better understanding of what you are working on.
My experience at Green Loop has been nothing but positive. Above all, my experience at Green Loop highlighted the importance of a supportive team. Working for and with a team that genuinely supports you to grow allows you to be a better employee. Everyone on the team cares about you and your professional and personal growth. I will never forget coworking with Amelia at various Indy coffee shops. (Side note: Thank you for showing me my current favorite spot: Blue Mind Roasting!) Then, when I began to look for a post-grad full-time position, Melanie provided so much guidance and support. This team is truly special and I cannot thank them enough.
